Over 2 million AI jobs in India with a 1 million talent gap: Bain & Company

India’s artificial intelligence sector is projected to create over 2.3 million job opportunities by 2027, though a widening talent gap threatens to leave 1 million positions unfilled without urgent reskilling efforts, according to a Bain & Company report. The study reveals the AI talent pool will grow to just 1.2 million professionals, forcing companies to rethink workforce development strategies as global tech firms like Motive Technologies and Microsoft expand operations in Bangalore.

India's Booming AI Job Market

AI-related job postings have surged by 21% annually since 2019, with salaries rising 11% each year as industries scramble for skilled professionals. The baseline demand for AI talent is expected to reach 1.5 million workers by 2025, peaking at 2.3 million roles across machine learning engineering, data science, and AI product management by 2027. This growth positions India as a critical battleground for global AI dominance, with companies like FedEx and Halliburton relying on Indian developers to power their AI implementations.

Talent Shortage and Reskilling Imperative

Despite the promising job figures, 44% of executives cite insufficient in-house expertise as their primary barrier to AI adoption. "The challenge lies in reskilling over 1 million workers on emerging tools like generative AI and computer vision platforms," said Saikat Banerjee, Partner at Bain & Company’s AI practice. The firm recommends prioritizing internal upskilling programs alongside traditional recruitment, noting that India’s talent pool will grow from 800,000 to 940,000 workers between 2024-2025 – still far below requirements.

Global Expansion into India's AI Talent Pool

Silicon Valley’s AI unicorns are aggressively tapping India’s engineering workforce, with Glean Technologies tripling its Bangalore team and document automation firm Abbyy establishing new R&D centers. Motive Technologies plans to hire 300+ AI specialists in Bangalore over two years, with CEO Shoaib Makani stating: “The talent density here rivals Silicon Valley." Norwegian energy AI firm Cognite AS will launch a 100-employee Bangalore facility this month, joining ElevenLabs and AlphaSense in the city’s $19.9 trillion AI economic corridor.

The Road Ahead for AI Adoption

The talent crunch extends beyond India – Bain’s global analysis predicts 1.3 million unfilled AI jobs in the US and 150,000 vacancies in the UK by 2027. Sarah Elk, Bain’s Americas AI head, emphasizes that businesses must “rethink retention strategies and innovation ecosystems” to stay competitive. As IDC forecasts $19.9 trillion in global AI economic impact by 2030, India’s ability to convert its 1.3 million annual tech graduates into AI specialists will determine its position in the new world order.
